The Internet has had the single largest impact on my own personal learning. As a member of the Millennial Generation, we take the Internet for granted. I have basically grown up with this powerful tool at my disposal my entire life; its almost as if the Internet and my generation have grown up together. The Internet is the cultural norm for us, treated like turning the sink on and seeing running water, but it is the most powerful learning tool we have today.
My entire higher educational experience is centered around the Internet. Throughout high school or college, if there was a question that needed answering, it was found on a computer. I am not sure if I even know how to properly navigate through a library. In college the library was a place used to meet for group projects, a quiet study area, or access to free wifi. The Internet is a virtually library with infinite resources for whatever it is you want to learn or research.
The Internet has had and will continue to have the greatest impact on my learning experience. I can think of no better example than the reason I am writing this post. The Internet is allowing me to be in a graduate program and earn my masters, all online. One of the highest levels of the educational experience can be fully completed solely through the Internet. That is absolutely amazing.
I go to different websites everyday to learn something new. I have not opened a print newspaper in about a year. When I want to learn what is going on around the world or in my local town, it’s done through online newspapers. I am big fan of The Huffington Post. Not only does that provide with current news events, I can follow blogs, authors, or even information on health and wellness.
The Internet can obviously be a great learning tool, having said that, it can be extremely distracting. There are so many options out that there that occupy your mind, but also distract you from accomplishing the task at hand. Personally, when I sit down to do a homework assignment, before I begin I check my social media accounts, ESPN, basically anything not related to the assignment. I will waste about a half hour before finally buckling down and completing what I originally set out to do.
The Internet is so complex and cool. You can learn about pretty much anything in the world and have that information accessible in seconds. You can earn certificates and college degrees without ever getting off of your couch. Technology has made learning so much more efficient and endless. You can learn so much more and come in contact with the opinions of experts all over the globe via the Internet. Technology in education is a game changer.
